Lagos
Further to the West lies Lagos, my favourite spot in the Algarve that I’ve been so far. Lagos offers picture perfect beaches, a huge nightlife scene, and has mostly escaped the mass tourism that other destinations have, allowing it to maintain its charm and small town vibe. Mentally, I could have stayed in Lagos for weeks or months on end, but my body and liver would have hated me in doing so. Taking a stroll around the historic centre will have you feeling like you’re in any other Portuguese city. Cobbled streets, a relaxed atmosphere and cute restaurants all welcome visitors and locals alike.
Lagos has extensive history and that is reflected in many of the attractions found within the city including ancient Moorish walls, Baroque churches, and a 17th century fort. We went to a different beach along the coast every single day, and they kept getting more and more beautiful every time we walked up. Heading south towards the Ponta da Piedade headland you will find weathered cliffs lined with secluded beaches, sea caves, arches and grottos that are regarded as some of the finest in all of the Algarve. You will also find some of the more well known beaches of Praia de Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo, arguably two of the nicest beaches in the entire Algarve. To the East is the 4km long Meia Praia beach, the largest sandy beach in the Western Algarve, which is home to the ‘End of Summer Party’ which I was fortunate enough to be there for whilst visiting (it occurs on the last weekend of August/First weekend of September ever year). Locals build campfires all along this beach for the sunset and to party the night away. Mara and I met some locals and spent the evening drinking and playing games with them which was a very unique experience during our time there.
Other things to do while in Lagos include kayaking through the grottos that are near to the town, taking a day trip to the Benagil Cave, enjoying the vibrant nightlife, and if you enjoy your party scene, hop onto a Black Cat Boat Cruise - an all inclusive boat cruise where you will have free drinks, shots (that may or may not be off of bodies), an incredible view of the sunset from the sea, and an epic time with a boatload of new friends.
If you’re considering a trip to the Algarve and want to keep an authentic Portuguese feel to your vacation, considering staying in Lagos. The beaches and views that you will be surrounded by will not disappoint.
